Koh Phangan: The Complete Travel Guide

Koh Phangan is one of those rare places that manages to be many things at once. It is the island of the Full Moon Party — one of the world's most famous beach gatherings — and also a destination for serious yoga practitioners, wellness seekers, and travellers who simply want to disappear into the jungle for a week. It is simultaneously accessible and remote, lively and deeply peaceful.

Getting to Koh Phangan

The most common route is to fly into Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi or Don Mueang) and then connect to Koh Samui (USM) or Surat Thani (URT). From Koh Samui, a 30-minute ferry will bring you to Thong Sala pier. From Surat Thani, the journey takes approximately 2.5 hours by high-speed ferry. Overnight trains from Bangkok to Surat Thani are also popular, particularly for budget-conscious travellers.

For those flying directly into Koh Samui, the Raja Ferry and Seatran Ferry both operate regular services to Koh Phangan throughout the day. We recommend booking ferry tickets in advance during peak season and Full Moon Party periods.

When to Visit

Koh Phangan has two distinct seasons. The dry season runs from December through April, with clear skies, calm seas, and temperatures in the low 30s Celsius. This is the most popular time to visit, and villas book up quickly — particularly around the Full Moon Party.

The wet season runs from May through November, with the heaviest rainfall typically in October and November. However, 'wet season' in Koh Phangan rarely means continuous rain — most days still offer several hours of sunshine, and the island is significantly less crowded. Villa rates are lower, and the jungle is at its most lush and dramatic.

The Best Beaches

Haad Rin Nok is the most famous beach on the island — the site of the Full Moon Party, with a long curve of white sand and clear water. Outside of party nights, it is a beautiful and relatively quiet beach.

Haad Yao, on the northwest coast, is consistently rated among the most beautiful beaches on the island — a long, gently curving bay with calm, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. Haad Salad, just north of Haad Yao, is smaller and more secluded.

Thong Nai Pan Yai and Thong Nai Pan Noi, on the northeast coast, are arguably the most beautiful beaches on the island — remote, pristine, and relatively undeveloped. The road to reach them is steep and winding, which keeps the crowds away.

Getting Around

The most practical way to explore Koh Phangan is by scooter. Rentals are widely available from around 200–300 THB per day. The roads vary in quality — some are excellent, others steep and challenging. Exercise caution, particularly in wet conditions.

Songthaews (shared pickup trucks) operate as informal taxis and can be flagged down on main roads. Negotiate the price before you get in. Private taxis are also available and can be arranged through your villa or via the Grab app.

Koh Phangan rewards those who venture beyond the main beaches. The interior of the island — waterfalls, jungle trails, hidden viewpoints — is largely unexplored by most visitors.

Dining and Nightlife

The food scene on Koh Phangan has evolved significantly in recent years. Srithanu village is the epicentre of the island's health food culture, with excellent raw food cafes, vegan restaurants, and smoothie bowls. Thong Sala has the best selection of local Thai food, particularly at the Walking Street night market on Thursday evenings.

For nightlife outside of the Full Moon Party, the Haad Rin area has the most concentrated bar scene. Amsterdam Bar, Drop In Club, and Cactus Bar are perennial favourites. The Jungle Experience and Pirates Bar are popular for their outdoor settings.
