Haad Yao

A long arc of white sand on Koh Phangan's northwest coast: swimming, reef snorkelling, sunset bars, and villas above the bay. The HOMI guide to Haad Yao.

Haad Yao — "long beach" — is exactly that: an unbroken arc of fine white sand on the island's northwest coast, facing due west into the sunset. It is the beach many returning guests measure the rest of the island against — developed enough for a good coffee and a rented kayak, quiet enough that mornings still belong to the tide.

The area

The bay slopes gently into clear water, with a fringing reef a few hundred metres offshore; the northern end usually offers the easiest swim-out and the clearest water, where snorkellers meet parrotfish, fusiliers, and the occasional blue-spotted ray. At low tide the water thins and the reef comes close to the surface, so swimming is at its finest around high tide. Behind the sand runs a low-key strip of beachfront restaurants, sunset bars, and paddleboard rentals, with boutique hillside stays climbing the ridge behind — a ridge that also hides a viewpoint that repays the climb. The wellness studios of Srithanu are five to ten minutes south, and Secret Beach is a short ride away.

Who it suits

Couples and families who want a beach they can actually swim at, walk for half an hour, and end with a sunset dinner — without committing to a resort strip or a party scene.

Practical

About 15–20 minutes from Thong Sala pier by taxi or scooter. Haad Salad is a few minutes further north; Srithanu a few minutes south.
