A local's guide to the stretches of sand worth the trip
Most visitors to Koh Phangan arrive with one beach in mind — Haad Rin, home of the Full Moon Party. But the island has a coastline of extraordinary variety, from the remote white-sand bays of the northeast to the calm, family-friendly waters of the south. Here is our guide to the beaches worth seeking out.
Thong Nai Pan Yai and Noi
These twin bays on the northeast coast are, by almost any measure, the most beautiful beaches on the island. The road to reach them is steep and winding — which is precisely why they remain relatively undeveloped. Thong Nai Pan Yai is the larger of the two, with a long curve of white sand and clear turquoise water. Thong Nai Pan Noi is smaller and more intimate.
Haad Yao
On the northwest coast, Haad Yao is a long, gently curving bay with calm, clear water and a relaxed atmosphere. It is one of the best beaches on the island for swimming, and the sunsets here are exceptional. The beach has a good selection of restaurants and bars, but retains a quieter character than Haad Rin.

Haad Salad
Just north of Haad Yao, Haad Salad is smaller and more secluded. The water is exceptionally clear, making it one of the best spots on the island for snorkelling. The coral reef just offshore is home to a variety of fish and, occasionally, sea turtles.
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuat)
Accessible only by boat or a challenging jungle trek, Bottle Beach is one of the most secluded and beautiful beaches on the island. The effort required to reach it keeps the crowds away. A long-tail boat from Haad Khom takes about 10 minutes and costs around 100 THB.
The best beaches on Koh Phangan are not the most famous ones. Venture beyond Haad Rin and you will find stretches of sand that feel entirely your own.
Baan Tai
The long, calm stretch of beach along the south coast at Baan Tai is ideal for families and those seeking a relaxed, uncrowded beach experience. The water is shallow and calm, making it excellent for children. The area has good restaurants and is conveniently close to Thong Sala.
