Koh Phangan vs Koh Samui: Which Island Should You Choose?

8 min read15 March 2025By HOMI Team

Two very different islands, 30 minutes apart by ferry

Koh Samui and Koh Phangan sit just 30 minutes apart by ferry, but they offer very different experiences. Samui is the more developed of the two — an international destination with a major airport, large resort hotels, and a well-established tourist infrastructure. Phangan is wilder, less developed, and — for many travellers — more interesting.

Koh Samui: The Developed Option

Koh Samui has direct international flights, which makes it significantly easier to reach. It has a wider range of accommodation, from budget guesthouses to ultra-luxury resorts. The roads are better, the infrastructure more reliable, and the dining scene more varied.

The downside is that Samui has lost some of its character in the process of development. The main tourist areas — Chaweng, Lamai — can feel generic and overcrowded. The beaches, while beautiful, are often busy.

Koh Phangan: The Authentic Option

Koh Phangan has developed considerably in recent years, but it retains a character that Samui has largely lost. The jungle is more present, the roads more adventurous, the beaches less crowded. The wellness and yoga scene runs deep. And the Full Moon Party — if that is your thing — is an experience unlike anything else.

The island is smaller and more navigable than Samui. Getting around by scooter is easy and enjoyable. The pace of life is slower, and the sense of discovery — of finding a beach or a viewpoint that feels entirely your own — is still very much alive.

If you want convenience and resort infrastructure, choose Samui. If you want character, nature, and a more authentic Thai island experience, choose Phangan.

Doing Both

Many travellers choose to split their time between the two islands. A common itinerary is to fly into Samui, spend a night or two there, and then take the ferry to Koh Phangan for the main portion of the trip. This allows you to experience both islands without the logistical complexity of flying in and out of Samui twice.
