Chaloklum is the island as it was: a northern fishing village where long-tail boats still land the day's catch and the seafood restaurants along the pier serve it the same evening. Tourism arrived here without replacing anything — which is precisely why people come.
The bay divides its pleasures neatly. To the west, Malibu Beach offers white sand and shallow turquoise water, at its swimmable best around high tide. To the east, the small cove of Haad Khom has reef snorkelling close to shore. From the pier, long-tail boats run to Bottle Beach — one of the island's iconic northern beaches, about twenty minutes by sea. Chaloklum is also the island's diving hub: most dive centres operate from here, running daily boats to Sail Rock, the granite pinnacle midway to Koh Tao known for schooling fish and occasional whale sharks. The village itself has everything daily life needs — markets, convenience stores, rentals — and a Sunday evening market worth planning around.
