The Full Moon Party: An Honest Guide

8 min read1 February 2025By HOMI Team

What it is, what to expect, and how to make the most of it

The Full Moon Party began in 1985 as a small gathering of backpackers on Haad Rin beach. Today, it draws between 10,000 and 30,000 people every month — a remarkable transformation that has made Koh Phangan one of the most recognised party destinations in the world.

What Actually Happens

The party takes place on Haad Rin Nok beach, on the southeast tip of the island. It begins at sunset and runs until well after dawn the following morning. The beach is lined with bars, each playing different music — from techno and trance to reggae and hip hop. Fire shows are a constant feature, and the entire beach glows with neon body paint.

The famous 'buckets' — large plastic buckets filled with a mixture of spirits, energy drinks, and fruit juice — are sold everywhere. They are strong, cheap, and responsible for many a lost evening. Drink responsibly.

Practical Advice

Wear old clothes and shoes you do not mind losing. The beach is sandy and wet, and neon paint is everywhere. Leave your passport and valuables at your villa — bring only a small amount of cash and your phone.

Arrange your return transport in advance. After the party, hundreds of people are trying to get back to their accommodation simultaneously. A private transfer booked through your villa is far more reliable than trying to find a songthaew at 6am.

The Full Moon Party is best experienced with a private villa to return to. The ability to decompress, swim in your own pool, and sleep in a quiet space makes an enormous difference.

Safety

Koh Phangan is generally safe, but the Full Moon Party attracts large crowds and opportunistic petty theft does occur. Keep your phone in a front pocket or a secure bag. Be aware of your surroundings, particularly in the early hours when the crowd thins.

The sea at Haad Rin can be rough, particularly at night. Swimming after drinking is strongly discouraged. Several drownings occur each year.

The Day After

Plan for a full recovery day. A private pool, a good breakfast, and a quiet afternoon are the ideal antidote to a Full Moon night. Most of our villas are within a 15–30 minute drive of Haad Rin, offering a balance of proximity and peace.
