Koh Phangan with Children: A Family Travel Guide

The best beaches, activities, and villas for families

Koh Phangan is often associated with the Full Moon Party, which happens at Haad Rin. Elsewhere on the island the pace is gentle, the beaches are calm, and the local community is warm and welcoming to families with children.

The Best Beaches for Families

Baan Tai beach sits on the south coast. The water is calm and shallow, the beach is long and uncrowded, and there are several good restaurants within easy reach. Haad Yao, on the northwest coast, is a long, gently curving bay with clear water and a relaxed atmosphere.

Thong Nai Pan Yai sits on the northeast coast. The bay is sheltered, the water is crystal clear, and the beach is relatively undeveloped. The road to reach it is steep.

Activities for Children

The waters around the island are clear and warm, and there are several snorkelling spots accessible by boat. Ang Thong Marine Park is a full-day trip — around 30 to 45 minutes each way by speedboat, and longer on a group boat that stops along the way.

The Phaeng Waterfall, in the centre of the island, is a popular destination for families. The walk through the jungle is manageable for older children. Phangan Elephant Sanctuary runs a no-riding, no-bathing model: visitors hand-feed the herd and walk the jungle trails while the elephants forage.

Choosing the Right Villa

We recommend looking for properties with a private pool (ideally with a shallow area for younger children), a fully equipped kitchen, and a garden or outdoor space. Our own villas sit on the west and north coasts — Srithanu, Haad Yao, Haad Salad, Hin Kong and Chaloklum. Of the beaches above, Haad Yao is the closest; Baan Tai and Thong Nai Pan Yai are a drive. Every one has a private pool and a kitchen; bedroom counts and layouts vary, so ask us which suit the ages you are travelling with.

Practical Tips

Koh Phangan sits on the Gulf coast, so its seasons run opposite to the Andaman side. October and November are the wettest months, and November is usually the rainiest — ferry crossings are sometimes cancelled then, which is worth planning around when you are travelling with children. The dry weather sets in from mid-December, and January through March is the most reliable window, with February usually the clearest. Avoid Full Moon Party dates unless you are specifically interested in the event — the island gets significantly busier and noisier around these times.

Koh Phangan has clinics and a hospital. For anything more serious, Koh Samui has larger private hospitals. Travel insurance that covers medical evacuation is strongly recommended for families travelling with young children.
